LIMS vs QMS
A LIMS runs the testing process. A QMS runs the quality system around it. Many laboratories need both, and the overlap is where confusion starts.
What each system owns
- LIMS: samples, tests, results, specifications, reports, instrument results and turnaround
- QMS: controlled documents, training, deviations, CAPA, change control, audits, suppliers
- LIMS answers 'what did this sample result as'; QMS answers 'is our system under control'
Where they overlap
- Equipment calibration and maintenance records can live in either
- Analyst training and competency links to method authorisation in both
- Out-of-specification handling starts in LIMS and often escalates into QMS investigation
- Document control of methods used in LIMS testing
- Decide the authoritative system for each overlapping record and document that decision
Do you need both
- Small laboratories often start with a LIMS plus disciplined document control
- Regulated and multi-site operations usually need a dedicated QMS
- Some LIMS products include quality modules that are sufficient for smaller scopes
- Duplicate records in two systems is the failure mode to avoid
A note on pricing
We do not publish instrument or software prices. Real transaction prices depend on configuration, condition, accessories, service coverage, installation, region and negotiation, and published list figures are rarely what a laboratory pays. Where you need a figure to plan with, request quotations against a written specification.
