New vs Used Laboratory Equipment

Used and refurbished instruments can be a sound decision or an expensive mistake. The difference is usually service supportability, software currency and how honestly the unit's condition was described.

What you get with new

  • Current hardware and software, with a supported upgrade path
  • Manufacturer warranty and installation and qualification services
  • Predictable lead time and known configuration
  • Full documentation for validation packages
  • Longest remaining service life before end-of-support

What used and refurbished can offer

  • Substantially lower acquisition cost for proven, mature technology
  • Immediate availability when new lead times are long
  • A practical way to add redundancy or a second identical unit
  • Access to older platforms your validated methods already run on

The risks that actually matter

  • End-of-support status: if the manufacturer no longer services or supplies parts, downtime becomes open-ended
  • Software and operating system currency, especially where data integrity controls are required
  • Detector, pump, source and column hardware wear that is invisible in photographs
  • Missing accessories, licences, manuals and calibration records
  • Unknown history of contamination or sample types
  • Shipping damage to sensitive components, and who carries that risk

Due diligence checklist

  • Ask for serial number, manufacture year and full service history
  • Confirm current manufacturer support and parts availability for that model
  • Ask what 'refurbished' includes — parts replaced, tests run, documentation supplied
  • Request a performance verification report against a defined specification
  • Ask to see it running, in person or on video, on a relevant sample
  • Confirm software licence transferability in writing
  • Establish warranty terms, duration and what is excluded
  • Plan your own installation verification before releasing results

A note on pricing

We do not publish instrument or software prices. Real transaction prices depend on configuration, condition, accessories, service coverage, installation, region and negotiation, and published list figures are rarely what a laboratory pays. Where you need a figure to plan with, request quotations against a written specification.
