How to Scope a Radionuclide Analysis Request
Start with suspected nuclides, matrix, programme and data-quality objectives before choosing gamma spectrometry or radiochemistry.
Define a defensible scope
- Distinguish gross alpha/beta screening, gamma identification and nuclide-specific activity.
- State required units, detectable activity, uncertainty, decay date, count time and sample geometry.
- Confirm preservation and authorized receipt/transport before sampling or shipment.
- For drinking-water compliance, confirm analyte-specific methods and the applicable legal programme; MARLAP provides project planning context.
Provider proposal checklist
- State intended use, samples/data, method and specification where known.
- Request evidence of relevant experience and actual scope/authorization where required.
- Agree controls, acceptance, uncertainty, data ownership, exclusions, cost and provider-confirmed schedule.
- Do not ship samples until acceptance and transport instructions are confirmed. Laboratory Vortex coordinates requests, not testing or approvals.
