Choosing a Virology Assay: PCR, Infectivity or Clearance
Choose the assay from the decision, not from an instrument name. Detection, infectious activity and process viral safety require different evidence.
Define a defensible scope
- PCR/RT-qPCR: define target and extraction controls; quantitative genome copies require calibration and do not represent infectious units.
- Infectivity: agree host system, containment, interference controls and assay sensitivity.
- Clearance: define process step, representative scaled-down model, model virus and limits on reduction-factor interpretation.
- Disinfectants: agree suspension/carrier/surface framework, contact conditions, neutralization and claim context.
Provider proposal checklist
- State intended use, samples/data, method and specification where known.
- Request evidence of relevant experience and actual scope/authorization where required.
- Agree controls, acceptance, uncertainty, data ownership, exclusions, cost and provider-confirmed schedule.
- Do not ship samples until acceptance and transport instructions are confirmed. Laboratory Vortex coordinates requests, not testing or approvals.
