What to Consider Before Buying an ICP-MS
ICP-MS is a capable but demanding platform. Most disappointment comes from underestimating matrix effects, facility requirements and the ongoing cost of running it well.
Start with the analytical requirement
- Which elements, at what concentrations, and against which specification or method
- Sample matrices involved: waters, digests, soils, biological, organics, high-salt
- Whether isotope ratio or speciation work is required, which changes the configuration
- Expected sample volumes and required turnaround
- Whether an ICP-OES would meet the requirement at lower complexity and cost
Interference and configuration considerations
- Collision or reaction cell capability, and which gases are supported
- Whether high-resolution or tandem quadrupole capability is needed for your interferences
- Sample introduction options for difficult matrices, including dilution systems
- Laser ablation, chromatographic or other hyphenated inputs if required
- Software correction approaches, and how they will be defended under audit
Facility and utilities
- Argon supply: cylinders, bulk or a generator, plus delivery logistics
- Exhaust extraction over the torch and heat load in the room
- Chilled water or recirculating chiller requirements
- Clean sample preparation area, and separation from dust and metals contamination
- Stable power, and floor space for the instrument, chiller and gas handling
Running cost and staffing reality
- Argon consumption is a significant ongoing cost
- Cones, torches, nebulisers, tubing and pump maintenance are routine consumables
- Standards, internal standards and quality control materials
- Service contract choice affects downtime more than purchase discount does
- A competent, trained analyst is essential; the technique punishes casual operation
New, used or outsource
- Used systems can be economical where the model is still manufacturer-supported
- Check source, vacuum, pump hours and detector condition on used units
- If volumes are low, sending samples to a laboratory may beat ownership outright
- A rental or lease can bridge a project before a capital decision
A note on pricing
We do not publish instrument or software prices. Real transaction prices depend on configuration, condition, accessories, service coverage, installation, region and negotiation, and published list figures are rarely what a laboratory pays. Where you need a figure to plan with, request quotations against a written specification.
