Guides and tools for independent, scientist-owned laboratories

Operational help for small and independent laboratories that want qualified work: describe what you actually do, prove it with verifiable scope, answer requests well and keep methods current. Business news and investigative analysis live in our news and intelligence sections; these pages are the action steps.

Get found for the work you can really do

Buyers search by method, matrix and recognition. Accredited capability should match the scope document your accreditation body publishes [1], and the accreditation body itself can be checked against the ILAC signatory search [2].

Run the business side carefully

Capacity, overflow and pricing decisions should rest on your own cost and quality data, not on rates published by others. ISO/IEC 17025 expects a laboratory to review requests and confirm it has the capability and resources before accepting work [1].

Stay current: standards and methods change agent

Each standards body publishes revisions differently. USP, for example, revises USP–NF three times a year plus monthly accelerated revisions [3], while AOAC moves methods from First Action to Final Action status through expert review [4]. Our change pages show where each body announces changes and how to verify a method still applies.
