Capacity utilisation and overflow outsourcing for small labs

Idle time and peak backlogs are two sides of the same problem. Measure your own capacity, then choose between selling spare time or subcontracting overflow under controls.

Measure your own capacity

Track instrument hours available versus used, analyst hours, and backlog age from your own records. We do not publish benchmark utilisation figures because no reliable public source supports one for all laboratory types. Keep equipment calibration and traceability current so spare capacity is actually usable [1].

Filling idle capacity

Options include contract testing within scope, instrument access for trained external users, and overflow work from other laboratories. Each needs authorisation, quality controls and export-control screening where relevant [2][3].

Outsourcing your overflow

When you subcontract, ISO/IEC 17025 expects you to use competent providers, inform the customer and keep responsibility for the results you report [2]. Check the subcontractor's scope through its accreditation body and ILAC [4].
