How to verify that a method still applies to your samples

Before using a new edition or a method for a new matrix, confirm it applies and that you can achieve its performance. This is a laboratory responsibility, not a publisher's.

Check scope and edition

Compare the method's stated scope with the sample type, analyte and range. Confirm the edition is current at the publisher: ISO catalogue [1], ASTM [2], AOAC status [3], USP official dates [4] or CLSI and FDA recognition [5].

Verify or validate

ISO/IEC 17025 expects standard methods to be verified before use and non-standard or modified methods to be validated [1].

Document and communicate

Record the edition, verification data and effective date. Update your listing and scope, and tell customers if reported methods change [1].
