Microbiology Testing

Source laboratories for bioburden, sterility, bacterial endotoxins and environmental monitoring. The sample matrix, product stage and required method determine suitability; a negative test alone does not validate an entire contamination-control process.

Services to scope with a provider

  • Bioburden enumeration and organism identification, including recovery/method-suitability work for the product.
  • Sterility testing by membrane filtration or direct inoculation where appropriate; confirm suitability and handling of bacteriostatic or fungistatic products.
  • Bacterial endotoxin testing using an applicable compendial method, with inhibition/enhancement assessment and justified limits.
  • Environmental monitoring of viable air, surfaces and personnel, with sampling plans, identification and trending.
  • Microbial limits and preservative-effectiveness studies for relevant nonsterile products.

Typical use cases

  • Medical-device bioburden before sterilization
  • Pharmaceutical microbiological release support
  • Cleanroom monitoring and investigations
  • Method suitability after a formulation change

Methods, standards and scope

These are general scope summaries, not standards text or a claim about the current edition. Confirm the required edition, local adoption, method suitability and the provider's specific accredited or authorized scope before ordering.

  • USP <71> addresses sterility testing; a passed test is not proof that every unit in a batch is sterile or that sterilization is validated.
  • USP <85> addresses bacterial endotoxins tests; recombinant reagent use must follow the applicable compendial/regulatory framework rather than be assumed interchangeable.
  • ISO 11737-1 concerns determination of a population of microorganisms on products; ISO 11737-2 concerns sterility tests used in sterilization-process definition, validation and maintenance, not routine compendial release testing.
  • Agree recovery efficiency, neutralization, sample preparation, controls and handling restrictions before method execution.

Prepare a useful request

  • Product/matrix, sterile or nonsterile status and stage
  • Compendial chapter or standard and required detection/acceptance limits
  • Sample count, preservatives, shipping conditions and timeline

From request to provider proposal

  • Describe your samples, objective, method and timeline once.
  • Laboratory Vortex reviews the request and may ask for clarification.
  • Independent providers assess feasibility and propose scope, sample requirements and pricing.
  • You confirm qualification, confidentiality and contract terms with the provider. Laboratory Vortex does not test samples, issue reports or guarantee quotes or turnaround.
