Artificial Intelligence for Laboratories

This page is organised by laboratory use case rather than by technology hype. Each use case states what the technology does, where it may fit, and where it falls down.

How to read this page

AI does not replace scientists, analysts, quality systems or validated methods. In a laboratory, results must remain attributable, reviewable and defensible, which places real constraints on where automated inference can be used. Treat every use case below as something to evaluate against your own data, quality system and risk assessment.

Data, privacy and confidentiality considerations

  • Know where data is processed and stored, and whether it leaves your jurisdiction
  • Confirm whether your data is used to train vendor models, and be able to switch that off
  • Client sample data and results are usually confidential and often contractually protected
  • Assess re-identification risk for clinical or human-derived data
  • Keep audit trails and record ownership intact when data passes through external services
  • Include AI tools in your supplier assessment and data integrity review

Integration considerations

  • Data quality and structure matter more than model choice
  • Instrument and LIMS integration is usually the real project
  • Version control for models, prompts and configuration, so results are reproducible
  • Change control when a model version changes underneath you
  • Clear boundaries on what the system may decide and what a human must approve
  • Monitoring for drift, and periodic verification against manual review

Human review and validation

Where output influences a reported result, a released document or a regulatory submission, a competent person must review and take responsibility for it. In regulated laboratories, computer system validation and data integrity expectations apply to AI-assisted tools just as they do to other software.

How we treat vendor information

Laboratory Vortex does not rate, rank or review laboratory software products, and publishes no pricing we cannot source. Product information is vendor-provided and labelled as such. Buyer guides describe how to evaluate options; they are not endorsements.
