Cargo & Pre-Shipment Inspection
Source independent inspectors for shipment condition, quantity, loading and agreed product sampling. Inspection documents what was observed against an agreed scope; it does not guarantee transit condition, customs clearance or compliance beyond that scope.
Methods, standards and specialized scopes
Scope pointers only—not copyrighted standards text or a claim that an edition is current. Confirm required edition, jurisdiction, product applicability and provider qualifications before work.
- Pre-shipment inspection: agree purchase specifications, quantity/identity checks, packaging condition, sampling and photographic evidence.
- Loading supervision: document container condition, seal identification, cargo securing observations and handling deviations. The IMO/ILO/UNECE CTU Code is guidance for packing cargo transport units, not an inspection certificate.
- Temperature-sensitive cargo: specify logger placement, calibration, excursion criteria and custody. A spot check cannot prove the full temperature history.
- ISO 2859-1 sampling may be appropriate for attribute inspection by agreement; define lot, defects, sampling plan and acceptance criteria. Laboratory contaminant/material tests are a separate method-specific engagement.
- Distribution testing such as ASTM D4169 or ISTA evaluates packaging under a defined test sequence, not an individual shipment's actual transit history.
Typical applications
- Supplier dispatch and receiving disputes
- Laboratory equipment shipment condition
- Container loading and seal documentation
- Sample collection for agreed third-party testing
What to include in an outsourcing brief
- Port/site, shipment date, commodity/equipment and access authorization
- Contract specification, sampling rules and nonconformance criteria
- Inspection report, time/location evidence, photos and custody documentation
