Where can I test a concrete core (ASTM C42)?
ASTM C42 covers obtaining and testing drilled cores to estimate in-place concrete strength. Some labs drill on site; others only test cores you supply — say which you need.
What the method covers
Drilled cores and sawed beams from hardened concrete; reports core strength with length-to-diameter correction where applicable.
Applicability caveats
- Core strength is not directly equal to cylinder strength; acceptance interpretation follows the governing code (e.g. ACI 318 for many U.S. projects).
- Reinforcement in the core, damage from drilling and moisture condition all affect results.
- Structural adequacy is an engineer's judgement, not a lab result.
