Who can investigate a corrosion or coating failure?
Coating and corrosion failures are usually traced to surface preparation, contamination, film build, cure or environment. Investigation combines cross-sections, adhesion tests (e.g. ASTM D3359, D4541), chemistry and sometimes exposure tests.
What the method covers
Painted, powder-coated, plated and galvanized parts and structures; cyclic or salt fog exposure (ASTM B117) for comparison panels.
Applicability caveats
- Salt fog hours do not translate directly into years of service.
- Field adhesion tests are destructive — agree locations first.
- Chloride and soluble salt contamination need dedicated surface tests.
