Who can identify an unknown particle with SEM/EDS?
SEM/EDS images a particle and reports its elemental composition. That identifies metals, minerals and many inorganic residues, but organic materials usually need FTIR or Raman spectroscopy as well.
What the method covers
Particles, debris, deposits and residues on filters, tape lifts or parts; EDS detects most elements heavier than boron, with limited sensitivity for light elements.
Applicability caveats
- EDS gives elements, not compounds — 'Fe, Cr, Ni' suggests stainless steel but does not prove a grade.
- Very small or thin particles may give substrate signal.
- Quantitative EDS on rough particles is approximate.
