Who can test a window, curtain wall or roof for water penetration?
ASTM E331 tests assemblies in a laboratory chamber under uniform static air pressure; ASTM E1105 is the field counterpart for installed products. Roof leaks are usually investigated with field methods chosen by the consultant.
What the method covers
Fenestration, curtain walls, storefronts and some envelope mock-ups; roofing water tests and electronic leak detection depend on membrane type.
Applicability caveats
- A lab pass does not prove the installed condition; field testing checks the installation.
- Test pressure comes from the project specification.
- Hose testing (e.g. AAMA 501.2) is a different, qualitative check.
