Carbon Fiber (CFRP) Failure Analysis
Composite failure analysis maps damage non-destructively first (ultrasonic C-scan, X-ray CT), then sections the part to examine fracture surfaces, ply structure, voids and fiber/resin content. Thermal analysis (DSC, DMA) checks cure and glass transition; bond-line examination addresses bonded joints. The aim is to separate design overload, impact damage, manufacturing defects and environmental degradation.
When is it used?
- Cracked or broken CFRP/GFRP parts
- Impact damage assessment
- Bonded joint or insert pull-out failures
- Suspected under-cure or moisture degradation
Sample considerations
- Do not cut the part before discussing it with the laboratory — NDT is done first.
- Provide layup, material system and cure cycle where available.
