Fastener, Anchor & Weld Failure Analysis

Fastener and weld investigations use fractography to identify the fracture mode (overload, fatigue, brittle, hydrogen-assisted), metallography to check microstructure and weld quality, hardness surveys, and chemical analysis to confirm the grade. Results are compared with the fastener or welding specification.

When is it used?

  • Broken bolts, anchors or studs
  • Cracked welds in structures or equipment
  • Suspected hydrogen embrittlement after plating
  • Corrosion-related connection failures

Sample considerations

  • Protect fracture surfaces from handling and corrosion; do not clean them.
  • Send unfailed fasteners from the same lot and the installation torque or load details.

Laboratories with relevant capabilities

  • ASAMS (Great Yarmouth, Norfolk) — documented: Weld failure examination
