Acoustic absorption vs airborne & impact isolation

Sound absorption (C423) reduces reverberation within a room; airborne transmission loss (E90 laboratory, E336 field) and impact sound (E492) describe isolation between spaces. STC (E413) and IIC (E989) are classifications computed from measured data.

Sample considerations

  • ASTM C423: Material, mounting type, specimen area and frequency range of interest
  • ASTM E90: Full partition assembly, perimeter sealing, flanking control and frequency range
  • ASTM E336: Building layout, room volumes, background levels and flanking paths
  • ASTM E413: Transmission-loss data set from a valid test and frequency range
  • ASTM E492: Complete floor-ceiling assembly, tapping-machine protocol and frequency range
  • ASTM E989: Impact sound data set from a valid test and frequency range
