Cold Chain Thermal Qualification
Scope a temperature-controlled shipping study using the product temperature limits, lane, payload and handling time. Thermal qualification is separate from mechanical transit testing.
| Scope | What it addresses | Boundary / RFQ input |
|---|---|---|
| Thermal qualification | Payload temperatures over defined profiles | Does not validate every lane/season |
| Mechanical distribution | Handling, vibration and compression | Does not establish thermal protection |
| Product stability | Product-specific storage/excursion evidence | Not supplied by a shipper temperature trace |
Define the shipping system
Specify product stability limits, allowable excursions, route/season, transit and delay scenarios, minimum/maximum payload, shipper, refrigerant preparation and pack-out instructions. Do not adopt an arbitrary temperature range or claim that one successful shipment validates every lane.
Measure product exposure
Agree chamber ambient profiles, conditioning, sensor locations, calibrated logger uncertainty, sampling interval and acceptance rules. Evaluate representative worst-case payloads and hot/cold scenarios. Preserve raw temperature traces, excursion duration, configuration photographs and deviations; define when operational lane verification is also needed.
Separate thermal and mechanical evidence
Drop, vibration and compression assess distribution hazards; temperature studies assess protection of a specified payload. Decide whether mechanically challenged shippers need thermal reassessment. Qualification of the shipper does not establish product shelf life or a universal transport approval.
Prepare a scoped RFQ
Send a concise objective first, then agree sample allocations and confidential documentation with the provider.
- Product, materials/formulation, patient or drug contact, contact duration, intended use and target market; identify changed materials, suppliers or processes.
- Finished configuration, sample count and lots, sterilization modality/cycles, aging and storage history; justify worst-case variants and destructive allocations.
- Existing evaluation plan, drawings, specifications, methods/editions, previous reports and acceptance criteria; send confidential files only through the private intake.
- Required report, quality/accreditation scope, budget range, location, shipping constraints and decision deadline; ask the provider to explain exclusions and subcontracted work.
