Construction Materials & Building Product Testing Laboratories
Construction testing covers two different buyers. Field and project testing (concrete cylinders, cores, soils-adjacent materials, steel and weld inspection) supports a specific building. Building product testing (windows, curtain walls, roofing, insulation, sealants, coatings, mass timber, composites) supports a manufacturer qualifying a product for codes, listings or CE marking. Both rely on mechanical, durability, chemical and fire testing.
What does it measure?
- Concrete: compressive, flexural and splitting tensile strength; air content, slump, density and setting
- Concrete durability: chloride penetration, freeze-thaw, alkali-silica reaction, sulfate resistance, shrinkage
- Cement, supplementary cementitious materials and aggregates characterization, including alternative and low-carbon binders
- Structural and reinforcing steel, fasteners, anchors and welds: tensile, bend, hardness and weld qualification
- Building envelope: air leakage, water penetration, structural wind load and impact
- Roofing, waterproofing, sealants and coatings: adhesion, weathering and durability
- Petrography and building-material identification

- Project QA/QC and special inspection requirements
- Qualifying a window, door, curtain wall, roofing or cladding product
- Developing low-carbon concrete or alternative binders
- Investigating cracking, leaks, corrosion or other construction failures
- Preparing performance data for EU CE marking under the Construction Products Regulation
Sample considerations
- Concrete cylinders and cores must be handled, cured and transported as the method specifies — ask the laboratory before sampling.
- Envelope tests are performed on full-size mock-ups or specimens built to the production detail.
- Include the governing specification, code edition and project requirement with the request.

Frequently asked questions
- Does every construction product need the same tests?
- No. Testing depends on the product type, the codes and specifications that apply, and the market. A window, a roofing membrane and a concrete mix have entirely different test programmes.
- Can one laboratory do everything?
- Rarely. Field concrete testing, full-scale fire testing and envelope mock-up testing usually sit with different specialist laboratories.
