Dye Penetration vs Bubble Leak Testing

Choose leak methods around porous or nonporous packaging, seal channels and gross defects—not a universal dye-and-bubble panel.

Match the defect and material

ASTM F1929 addresses dye detection of seal leaks in porous medical packaging; F3039 addresses dye penetration for nonporous packaging/flexible barrier materials. F2096 addresses gross leaks by internal pressurization. They are not identical sensitivity or defect measurements.

Controls and interpretation

Supply filled final packages and material drawings. Ask how dye wicking, intentional porosity, trapped air and pressure effects are distinguished from failures, and how positive/negative controls establish suitability. Agree destructive quantities, observation records and defect retention before testing.

Prepare a scoped RFQ

Send a concise objective first, then agree sample allocations and confidential documentation with the provider.

  • Product, materials/formulation, patient or drug contact, contact duration, intended use and target market; identify changed materials, suppliers or processes.
  • Finished configuration, sample count and lots, sterilization modality/cycles, aging and storage history; justify worst-case variants and destructive allocations.
  • Existing evaluation plan, drawings, specifications, methods/editions, previous reports and acceptance criteria; send confidential files only through the private intake.
  • Required report, quality/accreditation scope, budget range, location, shipping constraints and decision deadline; ask the provider to explain exclusions and subcontracted work.
