E-bike safety testing: UL 2849, UL 2271 and EN 15194 explained
E-bike fires are a recognised consumer hazard. The main North American standard for the complete electrical system is UL 2849; the battery pack is commonly evaluated under UL 2271; in Europe, EPACs are addressed by EN 15194. E-scooters, hoverboards and similar devices fall under UL 2272, not UL 2849.
Which standard covers what
Standards address different parts of the product:
Testing versus certification
A lab test report shows results against a standard on samples. Certification (a listing mark) is issued by a certification body, often an OSHA-recognised NRTL in the U.S., and involves factory follow-up. Ask buyers and marketplaces exactly which they require.
What to prepare
Typical inputs:
Guidance on standards scope only. Testing produces a report; certification or listing is issued separately by a certification body. Legal requirements depend on jurisdiction and product.
