UL 2849: electrical system testing for e-bikes

UL 2849 evaluates the electrical drive train system of an e-bike as a combination: battery system, charger system and motor/controller. It aims to reduce fire and electrical shock hazards.

Scope highlights

Evaluation commonly involves construction review and tests on the electrical system, such as charging behaviour, abnormal conditions, environmental exposure and mechanical abuse of the battery. The exact test list depends on the edition and design.

Relationship to UL 2271

A UL 2271 battery can simplify UL 2849 work because the battery has already been evaluated as a component, but the system combination still needs evaluation.

Common delays

Changes to cells, BMS firmware or charger during testing; missing component certifications; insufficient samples.

Guidance on standards scope only. Testing produces a report; certification or listing is issued separately by a certification body. Legal requirements depend on jurisdiction and product.
