PFAS Testing for Industrial Materials, Articles & Textiles

PFAS in manufactured articles can be intentionally added — durable water repellents, processing aids, fluoropolymer coatings — or present as a residue, and the testing approach depends on which question you are answering.

What does it measure?

  • Total fluorine or total organic fluorine as a presence/absence screen
  • Targeted PFAS compounds extracted from the material
  • Component-level results that identify which part of an assembly carries the fluorine

When is it used?

  • Restricted substance list compliance and customer declarations
  • Qualifying a fluorine-free replacement material or finish
  • Supply chain verification where a declaration cannot be substantiated
  • Textiles, technical fabrics, seals, gaskets, wire insulation and coated metal

Sample considerations

  • Identify every component of an assembly you need covered; a single result rarely represents the whole part.
  • Fluoropolymers such as PTFE are themselves fluorinated, so a fluorine screen on a fluoropolymer part will report high fluorine by design.
  • State the restriction or threshold you are working to so the laboratory can select an appropriate reporting limit.

Frequently asked questions

My supplier says the material is PFAS-free — why test?
Declarations are often based on the formulation rather than on analysis, and fluorinated processing aids or contaminated equipment can put fluorine into a nominally PFAS-free material. Testing verifies the declaration.
Will a fluorine screen distinguish PTFE from a surface treatment?
Not on its own. Fluoropolymers report high total fluorine because fluorine is part of the polymer. Component separation or targeted analysis is needed to tell an added treatment from the base material.
