Structural Steel, Weld Inspection & Nondestructive Testing

Structural steel verification combines destructive mechanical testing (tensile, bend, Charpy impact, hardness) with welder and welding-procedure qualification, and nondestructive examination (visual, ultrasonic, radiographic, magnetic particle, liquid penetrant) of production welds. Acceptance criteria come from the governing code, such as AWS D1.1 for steel structures.

What does it measure?

  • Tensile, yield and elongation of steel and weld coupons
  • Guided bend, Charpy impact and hardness testing
  • Welder performance and procedure qualification records
  • Weld discontinuities by UT, RT, MT and PT
  • Bolt, fastener and anchor verification

When is it used?

  • Shop and field weld inspection on building and bridge projects
  • Qualifying welders and welding procedures before production
  • Investigating weld cracking or connection failures
  • Verifying material grade of existing or undocumented steel

Sample considerations

  • State the governing code and edition, joint configuration and acceptance criteria with the request.
  • For existing structures, note access constraints and whether destructive sampling is permitted.

Frequently asked questions

Which NDT method should I specify?
It depends on the discontinuities of concern, joint geometry and access: MT and PT find surface-breaking flaws, UT and RT examine the weld volume. The governing code or an NDT level III usually defines the method.
