Private Well Water Testing

Scope a private-well laboratory panel, microbial and nitrate checks, lead/arsenic concerns and sampling versus screening limitations. Laboratory Vortex coordinates requests to independent providers; it does not perform testing or certify homes safe.

A panel matched to the well

Private wells generally do not receive the same routine public-water-system monitoring. EPA recommends annual testing for total coliform bacteria, nitrates, total dissolved solids and pH, with additional contaminants selected for local conditions. Discuss nearby land uses, geology, plumbing, treatment and changes after flooding or repairs with local authorities and the laboratory.

Lead, arsenic and treatment questions

Lead can relate to plumbing and sampling conditions; first-draw and flushed samples answer different questions. Arsenic testing measures a defined water sample and may need additional speciation for a particular assessment. Ask about suitable metals methods, reporting limits and whether paired pre/post-treatment samples are needed; we do not prescribe a universal collection protocol.

Collection and interpretation

  • Order the laboratory's sterile/preserved bottles and follow its collection, cooling and delivery requirements.
  • Separate raw-well, tap and post-treatment sample locations; record collection time and relevant treatment conditions.
  • A home strip, odour or clear appearance cannot establish the absence of bacteria, lead, arsenic or PFAS.
  • Discuss results and next actions with the laboratory, local public-health authority or qualified professional; one result does not establish ongoing safety.
