Radiation & Radiological Testing and Analysis

Radiological testing measures radioactivity in a sample or radiation levels in an environment. It is a specialist field: laboratories usually hold specific licences and scopes. Describe the sample and the requirement, and we route the request to laboratories whose published scopes cover it.

What this page covers

  • Gross alpha and gross beta screening
  • Gamma spectroscopy for identifying and quantifying radionuclides
  • Radium, uranium, radon and tritium analysis, including in drinking water
  • Radioactivity in soils, sediments, building materials, food and consumer products
  • Wipe and smear testing for surface contamination
  • Environmental radiation surveys and dosimetry services

Often confused — and where to go instead

  • Product irradiation and radiation sterilization (gamma, electron beam, X-ray) process products; they are not analysis — see sterilization validation
  • EMC and RF emissions testing deals with electromagnetic interference, not ionising radiation — see electrical and EMC testing
  • Radiographic NDT (X-ray and CT inspection) uses radiation to image parts; it does not measure radioactivity — see NDT

Before you request quotes

  • The matrix (water, soil, material, product, swab) and sample quantity
  • Which radionuclides or screening parameters you need, and required detection limits
  • Any regulation, permit or customer specification the result supports
  • Whether samples are known or suspected to be radioactive — this affects shipping and licensing

How Laboratory Vortex fits in

Laboratory Vortex does not perform this work and is not a consultancy, testing laboratory or certification body. We take your request, check it is complete, and route it to providers whose published capabilities match. You compare scope, people and price, and contract with the provider directly.
