Who can run battery abuse or thermal runaway fire testing?
Abuse testing deliberately drives cells or packs into failure to study thermal runaway and propagation. UL 9540A is a test method for evaluating fire propagation in battery energy storage systems at cell, module, unit and installation levels; it produces data, not a pass/fail certification.
What the method covers
Cells, modules and packs; requires specialized bunkers, gas analysis and fire safety infrastructure.
Applicability caveats
- Abuse test results depend heavily on trigger method and state of charge.
- Only facilities with appropriate containment can run large-format tests.
- UL 9540A data feeds code compliance decisions made by others (e.g. fire officials).
