UL 9540A Thermal Runaway Testing — Edition & Installation Inputs
Thermal-runaway fire-propagation evaluation produces evidence about a defined battery energy-storage configuration. Scope the test level, triggering strategy and measurements with the laboratory and the authority reviewing the installation; a test report is not blanket approval for every installation.
Edition dates are not adoption dates
UL Standards & Engagement lists UL 9540A Edition 5 as published March 12, 2025 and Edition 6 as published March 13, 2026. UL Solutions describes testing to both editions. NFPA identifies a 2026 edition of NFPA 855; an exact publication or effective date is not asserted here. Agree the edition required by the adopted code, authority having jurisdiction and project specification rather than treating the newest publication as universally mandatory.
Define the evidence needed at each level
Cell, module, unit and installation evaluations address different boundaries. State the cell chemistry, propagation paths, cabinet layout, spacing, ventilation and protective systems that need representation. Agree which heat, gas, flame or other measurements support the intended assessment and what triggers escalation between test levels. Changes in enclosure, suppression, cell supplier or module architecture may affect the relevance of an earlier result.
Keep method, certification and installation review separate
UL 9540A is a fire-propagation test method; UL 9540 concerns energy-storage system safety and certification, while NFPA 855 addresses installation context. Ask the provider to identify exactly what its report establishes and what remains for design review or the authority. A useful RFQ includes drawings and the intended approval question, not only a request for a 'UL test'. Avoid assuming that passing one evaluation eliminates fire risk.
Sample considerations
- Provide energy, chemistry, cell supplier, module/unit drawings and intended installation arrangement.
- Identify protection, venting, detection and suppression configurations and the edition requested by the reviewer.
- Agree test levels, destructively consumed units, hazardous transport, witnesses and required measurement outputs.
Questions to ask a laboratory
- Which edition does our authority require, and does the quotation name it explicitly?
- What configuration changes would invalidate or limit reuse of this report?
- How are test-level escalation and report exclusions agreed before testing?

Frequently asked questions
- Is UL 9540A a certification?
- No. UL 9540A is a test method that characterises thermal runaway fire propagation; the resulting data supports system-level certification and permitting decisions.
- Do I need UN 38.3 before shipping prototypes?
- Lithium cells and batteries generally must meet UN 38.3 test requirements before transport. Confirm the applicable rules for your configuration with the laboratory and your carrier.
