Environmental Performance Testing — Thermal, Vibration, Salt & IP

Environmental performance testing challenges a product with specified stresses and checks the functions that matter. It is product reliability work, not environmental contaminant analysis. Choose temperature, vibration, corrosion and ingress tests from the intended environment and failure mechanisms.

Tailor severity and sequence to actual use

State storage, transport and operating environments and the decisions the tests must support. IEC 60068 methods provide defined test procedures, while product or customer specifications supply the applicable severities and criteria. MIL-STD-810 is a tailoring framework, not a blanket product certification. Separate design exploration from formal qualification and record why each stress and sequence represents the required exposure.

Measure function during and after stress

A specimen remaining intact is not sufficient when accuracy, leakage, communication or motion are critical. Agree instrumentation, operating load, power modes, prechecks and recovery checks. Sequential tests can reveal damage that isolated exposures miss, but the sequence must be justified. Record fixtures, cable constraints and chamber conditions so results can be reproduced without assuming that every variant behaves identically.

Keep salt and ingress claims bounded

Salt spray is a controlled corrosion exposure, not a universal service-life prediction. IEC 60529 IP codes describe specified enclosure protection tests; a water numeral does not mean waterproof in every condition or after aging. Define seals, connectors, mounting and the requested code separately. Ask which environmental preconditioning is required by the applicable product specification and whether it affects the enclosure state.

Method & standards pathways

These grouped guides separate method families, buyer inputs and scope boundaries so requests carry the right designation, edition context and configuration. No universal panel or code acceptance is implied.

  • Window & door air, water and wind method selection: Air leakage (E283), water penetration (E331 uniform, E547 cyclic, E1105 field), structural wind (E330) and windstorm impact/cyclic loading (E1886, E1996) are separate exposures. Specify the product, installation and the exact question before choosing.
  • Automotive electronics: environmental loads, EMC & transients: ISO 16750 parts 1–5 cover environmental conditions and testing for vehicle E/E equipment; ISO 11452 covers component EMC immunity; ISO 7637 covers conducted transients; ISO 20653 covers road-vehicle IP-code ingress; ISO 3795 screens interior-material burning behaviour. Specify the component, vehicle location and exact part.

Sample considerations

  • Provide operating/storage/transport environment, exact specifications and severity rationale.
  • Supply representative units, fixtures, firmware, loads and functional acceptance criteria.
  • Agree test sequence, recovery checks, corrosion evaluation and requested ingress code/configuration.

Questions to ask a laboratory

  • What supports each stress severity and the sequence for our use case?
  • Which critical functions are monitored during exposure rather than only afterwards?
  • What claims are explicitly outside a salt-spray or IP test report?

Frequently asked questions

Can environmental and vibration exposure be combined?
Yes, combined environment testing is available at laboratories with suitable chambers and shakers, and is often required by military and automotive specifications.
