Battery Safety Testing — Transport, Abuse & Failure Investigation
Specify battery safety work by chemistry, cell/module/pack level and intended use. Transport classification, portable-product safety and stationary energy-storage fire evaluation answer different questions and cannot be collapsed into a single battery certification.
Start with the decision and system level
A transport programme under UN 38.3 is not a complete evaluation of an e-bike, medical device or stationary storage installation. Identify the end product and destination markets, then separate transport evidence from product-standard and fire-propagation evidence. Battery management, enclosure, thermal controls and protective devices may change the relevant configuration. A cell result cannot be assumed to describe the assembled pack or installed system.
Emerging chemistry needs explicit scoping
UNECE states that the eighth revised Manual of Tests and Criteria introduced sodium-ion battery provisions, and publishes Amendment 1 from 2025. This is verified transport context, not a claim that every sodium-ion design follows identical requirements. For sodium-ion or solid-state prototypes, identify electrolyte, energy, construction and transport classification with a qualified specialist; do not infer reduced hazards or regulatory exemptions from a chemistry label.
Screen the facility before shipping
Ask about allowable energy, chemistry, state of charge, damaged-unit acceptance, containment and instrumentation. Destructive abuse, thermal runaway and diagnostic teardown need different facilities and evidence handling. Request the exact method edition, deviations, witnessed tests and reporting boundaries. Confirm that any accreditation or certification role applies to the provider site and method you require; Laboratory Vortex coordinates requests and does not certify batteries.
Sample considerations
- State chemistry, voltage, capacity/energy, dimensions, cell format and cell/module/pack configuration.
- Supply protection architecture, firmware, operating modes and intended markets; identify prototypes or damaged batteries.
- Agree state of charge, handling, carrier restrictions, hazardous shipment arrangements and destructive allocation before sending anything.
Questions to ask a laboratory
- Which transport and product requirements apply independently to this configuration?
- Can this site handle our energy, chemistry and damaged-unit condition safely?
- Which tests need production-representative units and which changes trigger reevaluation?

Frequently asked questions
- What is UN 38.3 testing?
- The UN Manual of Tests and Criteria subsection 38.3 covers lithium-battery transport tests including altitude simulation, thermal testing, vibration, shock and external short circuit, with other tests applicable by cell/battery type. Confirm transport rules and test-summary requirements; it is not general EV safety certification. Official source: https://unece.org/transport/dangerous-goods/rev8-files
- Can a laboratory test my whole pack?
- Some can. Pack-level testing requires larger chambers, higher power channels and safety containment, so capability varies significantly between laboratories.
