Fuel Cell Membrane & Stack Durability — Protocols and Degradation Evidence
Fuel-cell durability work measures performance decay under defined operating protocols. Membrane, catalyst and stack-level degradation proceed by different mechanisms, so the protocol, diagnostics and reporting must state what is actually being aged and measured.
Choose protocols that represent the duty
Load cycling, start-stop, freeze-thaw, steady-state and contaminant exposures stress different components. Harmonized accelerated stress test protocols exist for membrane and catalyst evaluation; agree which apply to your cell design and how they map to the intended application rather than accumulating hours under an arbitrary profile.
Instrument for mechanism, not just voltage decay
Polarization curves, electrochemical impedance, leak and crossover measurements, and post-mortem analysis distinguish membrane, catalyst and interface degradation. Ask which diagnostics run in-situ, what reference cells or controls are used, and how end-of-test teardown is planned. A decay rate without mechanism evidence is of limited design value.
Report conditions with the result
Temperature, humidity, gas quality, stoichiometry and compression all affect measured decay. Request the full operating record and any deviations with the data. Durability evidence is design- and protocol-specific; extrapolation to field life requires stated assumptions, and certification or type approval is a separate activity.
Sample considerations
- Provide cell/stack design, MEA details, intended application and duty cycle.
- State which degradation mechanisms the programme must resolve.
- Agree protocol, diagnostics, controls, duration and post-mortem plan.
Questions to ask a laboratory
- Which accelerated stress protocols apply to this cell design?
- What in-situ diagnostics distinguish membrane, catalyst and interface decay?
- How are operating conditions and deviations recorded and delivered?
