Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Testing — Materials Compatibility, Leakage & Performance

Hydrogen systems combine materials compatibility, containment and electrochemical performance questions. Metals embrittlement, leak integrity and fuel-cell durability are distinct programmes; specifying which decision the evidence must support is the first step.

Define the system boundary

A storage vessel, valve, seal, pipeline or fuel-cell stack each has its own applicable requirements and test regimes. Identify the pressure, temperature, purity and duty cycle of the service, and whether the need is material qualification, component validation, or performance characterization. National and international frameworks for hydrogen components continue to develop; confirm with the laboratory and the relevant authority which standards and editions apply to your application.

Respect hydrogen-specific facility demands

High-pressure hydrogen testing needs purpose-built facilities, gas handling and safety systems. Ask about maximum pressure and temperature, hydrogen versus surrogate gas methods, embrittlement test capability and leak-detection sensitivity before assuming a general mechanical laboratory can perform the work.

Plan evidence across disciplines

Materials qualification, leak and pressure cycling, and stack durability generate complementary but separate datasets. Agree how specimens, instrumentation and reporting are handled across any subcontracted work, and how the results will be used — certification support, design validation or research. Laboratory Vortex coordinates requests; it does not certify hydrogen systems.

Sample considerations

  • Provide component drawings, materials, service pressure/temperature/purity and duty cycle.
  • State the decision the evidence supports and any invoked standards or regulations.
  • Agree specimen quantities, destructive allocation, gas requirements and reporting format.

Questions to ask a laboratory

  • What hydrogen pressure, temperature and purity can your facility handle?
  • Which standards apply to this component, and who confirms acceptability?
  • How is safety managed for hydrogen-charged or failed specimens?
