PCB & Solder Joint Failure Analysis — From Symptom to Mechanism
Printed-circuit-board failure analysis connects an electrical symptom to a physical mechanism. The investigation sequence — non-destructive first, destructive later — and the preservation of the failed assembly matter more than any single instrument.
Preserve the failed state
Do not power up, rework or clean a failed board before the investigation is scoped. Record the failure conditions, firmware state, field history and handling. Ionic residues, dendrites and fracture surfaces are easily disturbed; ask the specialist how the assembly should be packed, which areas must remain untouched, and whether witness or chain-of-custody requirements apply.
Sequence localization before sectioning
Electrical characterization, visual and X-ray inspection, and thermal or acoustic techniques can localize a defect before any destructive step. Cross-sectioning, SEM/EDS or dye-and-pry then test specific hypotheses. Agree the sequence and the decision points: each destructive step forecloses later ones, and an unfocused sectioning plan can consume the only evidence available.
Separate mechanism from contributing cause
A cracked solder joint, conductive filament or corroded via is a finding; why it formed requires the design, materials and service conditions to be considered together. Request a report that distinguishes confirmed observations, supported mechanisms and unresolved alternatives, and retain failed and reference boards for any dispute. Laboratory Vortex coordinates inquiries; it does not perform the analysis.
Sample considerations
- Provide the failed assembly, known-good references, schematics/layout where shareable and the field history.
- Describe the symptom, when it appears, and any environmental or mechanical stress context.
- Agree destructive-test authorization, witness requirements and evidence retention before work begins.
Questions to ask a laboratory
- What non-destructive localization is possible before sectioning?
- Which hypotheses can each proposed technique discriminate?
- How will the report separate observation, mechanism and unresolved causes?

Frequently asked questions
- What does ionic contamination testing tell me?
- It quantifies ionic residues that can enable leakage currents, corrosion or dendritic growth. Resistivity-of-solvent-extract methods give a bulk indication; ion chromatography identifies specific ionic species.
